National Spokesperson, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community

Harris Zafar is National Spokesperson for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA – among the oldest Muslim organizations in America – and author of book “Demystifying Islam: Tackling the Tough Questions.” Harris addresses issues facing Islam and the Muslim world in various media while also elucidating the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s global efforts towards pluralism and understanding. A staunch advocate for universal human rights, Harris was praised in a March 2012 motion raised on the floor of the House of Commons in Great Britain for his work defending religious freedom.

A frequent speaker and lecturer at conferences, universities, schools, interfaith services, churches and other public events, Harris has spoken across the United States and internationally. He is also an Adjunct Instructor of Islamic Studies at two colleges, instructing courses about the teachings of Islam and the history of both the religion and its Prophet Muhammad. He regularly appears on national and local news in print, TV and radio to provide insight on current issues from an Islamic perspective and to condemn intolerance and human rights abuses, especially when done in the name of religion.

Harris is a freelance writer, who has penned several pieces published in USA Today, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Huffington Post, New York Daily News, BeliefNet, Oregonian, and Muslim Sunrise (among the oldest U.S. Muslim periodicals). His much anticipated debut book “Demystifying Islam” just released in June of 2014.

Harris also serves Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s youth organization as National Director of Faith Outreach, encouraging Muslim youth to understand and speak out about the true teachings of Islam. He previously served as National Director of Community Service and local President of the Portland chapter. Holding a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon, Harris leads various business and technology programs in his day job while continuing his dedicated work towards peace, education and pluralism through his lectures, writings, interfaith dialogue and media appearances.

Son of Pakistani parents, Harris was born and raised in the United States and maintains his identity as a Muslim and an American by following Islam’s commandment to be a loyal citizen of the country in which one resides. He is married with three beautiful children and currently resides in Portland, Oregon.
