Since 1966 Professor (now emeritus) of German Literature at University of California, Santa Cruz, and Dean of its Graduate Division 1977-86. President of California Association of Scholars 2008-2014, Chairman at present (CAS is the state affiliate of the NAS). Founding Secretary of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics (formed 1994 as alternative to politicized MLA). Author of nine books, including two on the culture wars: Literature Lost: Social Agendas and the Corruption of the Humanities (Yale 1997), and Against Deconstruction (Princeton 1989). Literary editor of Heterodoxy (ed David Horowitz and Peter Collier) 1992-2001. Author of CAS study "A Crisis of Competence: the Corrupting Effect of Political Activism in the University of California."
