Vice President of External Communications, National Mining Association<br /> <br /> Luke is responsible for media relations, speech writing and developing communications strategies and products to assist NMA’s government and regulatory affairs departments. He writes a monthly Washington column for an industry trade magazine, frequently makes public presentations on behalf of NMA and is a guest lecturer in public affairs at the George Washington University Law School.<br /> <br /> Luke joined NMA in November 2003 after spending seven years as senior vice president with Smith &amp; Harroff, Inc., a public affairs consulting firm in Alexandria, Va., where he served a variety of political, energy and manufacturing clients chiefly in the fields of media relations, crisis communications and speech writing. Luke had earlier worked as vice president of communications for the American Forest and Paper Association in Washington, D.C. He wrote a national newsletter on federal land management and environmental issues, and editorials for trade magazines, as principal of Popovich News Services, Inc. Luke began his career in journalism, first at The Washington Monthly magazine and later at Congressional Quarterly.<br /> <br /> Luke graduated from George Washington University in 1970 with a B.A. in Philosophy and completed two years toward a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Georgetown University.
