M. Rafiqul Islam

Professor, Macquarie University

Professor Islam studied Economics and Law at Rajshahi University in Bangladesh and obtained BA Honours and MA in Economics and LLB with first class. He also obtained LLM and PhD, both in International Law, from Monash University, Australia, under the Monash Graduate Scholarships. Professor Islam was an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Law at Rajshahi University and Head of the Department of Law at the University of Papua New Guinea before joining Macquarie University in February 1991. Professor Islam has been an active legal researcher, who has published extensively in his areas of teaching and research interest, mostly in public international law. He was awarded the "Outstanding Teacher Award" by Macquarie University in 2000 for his contributions to teaching and higher degree research supervision and administration. Professor Islam is currently the principal supervisor and associate supervisor of a number of PhD candidates in various areas of international economic and trade law, the WTO law, foreign direct investment law, international environmental law, climate change induced displacement, international human rights law, and international river law.
