Democratic Rep. David Trone of Maryland cut out a portion of his new Senate primary TV ad after a coalition of black women slammed it for being racist, Axios reported on Thursday.
Trone recently launched an attack ad against his black Democratic opponent, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, during which a local black politician argued that the “U.S. Senate is not a place for training wheels.” Trone’s campaign removed the “training wheels” phrase from the video after over 650 black women wrote in a letter that the ad’s sentiment was “not only disparaging and dismissive but also echoes tones of misogyny and racism,” according to Axios.
“Our team noticed a typographical error in the number of bills that David has passed through Congress,” the campaign told Axios in a statement. “While fixing that error, our editors found additional footage of our endorsers that they found compelling and chose to make a number of additional edits.”
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Donna Brazile was among the signees of the letter criticizing Trone’s ad, according to Axios. (RELATED: Dem Rep Drops Racial Slur In Front Of Black Biden Official During House Hearing)
Trone appeared to mistakingly use the racial slur “jigaboo” during a congressional hearing in front of a black Biden administration official in late March. The congressman later apologized, arguing he meant to use the term “bugaboo,” instead.
Following Trone’s comment, numerous Democratic lawmakers threw their support behind Alsobrooks‘ campaign, including Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, Barbara Lee of California, Gregory Meeks of New York, Yvette Clarke of New York, Joyce Beatty of Ohio and Jasmine Crockett of Texas.

The county executive has also picked up endorsements from Maryland Democrats Gov. Wes Moore, Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Steny Hoyer, along with Democratic Sens. Laphonza Butler of California, Raphael Warnock of Georgia, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Patty Murray of Washington.
Trone has the support of more than 60 Democratic House members, including Reps. Adam Schiff of California and Colin Allred of Texas.
The congressman is currently leading Alsobrooks by 13 points in FiveThirtyEight’s survey average for the May 14 Democratic primary. Trone fares better against former GOP Gov. Larry Hogan than Alsobrooks does for a November matchup, but most polling suggests the Republican would win against either Democrat.
The seat, which Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin is retiring, is currently characterized as in the “Likely D” column by The Cook Political Report.
Trone’s campaign did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
