NEW YORK (AP) — Barnes & Noble Inc. says it’s launching a textbook rental program for college students.

The new program will be available though campus bookstores or the stores’ Web sites. It’s designed to allow students to cut their textbook costs by as much as 50 percent for some titles.

The world’s largest book seller announced the program Monday.

The effort will be operated through its subsidiary Barnes & Noble College Booksellers LLC.

That unit operates bookstores at nearly 640 colleges across the country. About 25 of those stores already offer the book rentals through a pilot program.
