A storm was expected to bring moderate to heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the Southeast on Saturday, and to get more powerful as the day progressed.

Out West, a storm was expected to dump rain on an area stretching from Northern California to Washington state, and snow was likely at higher elevations. Some precipitation was expected to filter into the intermountain West later in the day. The system signals a shift that is expected to bring widespread wet and windy weather to the region through next week.

Parts of the Northeast and Ohio Valley were expected to get isolated showers, but dry weather was forecast for the rest of the country.

Temperatures were expected to rise into the 30s and 40s in the Northeast and Northwest; into the 60s and 60s in the Southeast; into the 20s and 30s in the Midwest; and into the 40s, 50s and 60s in the southern Plains.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of minus-9 degrees at Gunnison, Colo., to a high of 79 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
