RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) — A 15-year-old California girl who told police she had been kidnapped off the street and raped now says she made up the story.
The Richmond teenager had claimed she was forced into a car with four males at gunpoint Friday night and driven around for several hours before two of them raped her.
Lt. Mark Gagan says the girl called Richmond police around 1 p.m. Sunday and told them the story was not true.
The girl says she had had consensual sex with someone, but needed an explanation for why she had not returned home Friday night.
Gagan says dozens of patrol officers, detectives, forensic technicians and nurses had been working on the investigation. Police found physical evidence Sunday that confirmed the girl had made up her initial story.
In October, Richmond police say a 16-year-old girl was the victim of a gang rape outside a homecoming dance at a local high school.
