KABUL (AP) — NATO says international forces have killed an Afghan civilian after opening fire at a speeding vehicle with no headlights in a southern district that has seen heightened unrest.

A statement says the Afghan man died Sunday. It says the shooting occurred in the Garmsir district of Helmand province.

NATO says the civilian was one of six people in the vehicle, but nobody else was injured. The man was shot in the chest when international soldiers fired at the grill. NATO and Afghan officials are investigating the shooting.

Garmsir has been the site of violent demonstrations this week after rumors spread that NATO forces had desecrated a Quran. NATO denies the rumors.
