Substitute teacher takes a swing at reviving corporal punishment in Dallas

Font Size:

One teacher in Dallas really misses the good ole days when students could be flogged and he’s launching a campaign on the newfangeled internet to bring it back.

Gilbert Leal wants to bring back corporal punishment. For his efforts, he has managed to grab the attention of at least school board members and his website, bringbacklicks.com, is going strong. It has its own theme song.

According to the Dallas Morning News:

Leal said he got the idea from Temple Independent School District, which reinstated its corporal punishment policy last year. The district also moved to improve teachers’ classroom management techniques, and only one student has been paddled – with a parent present – since the policy was reinstated. Disciplinary issues have reportedly improved with the new policies in place

Leal said corperal punishment is more about carrying the can, than using it:

It’s the psychology of it, the threat of licks,” Leal said. “That’s what I think is so effective.”

Being an actually teacher might work as just as well. Leal is a substitute whose efforts are sure to make him the target of cracks more vicious than those hurled at Ms. Krabappel.
