Senator offers new version ‘Extenders Bill’

Senate Democratic leaders were planning to unveil a new, pared-back version of a tax and benefits bill Wednesday because an earlier version of the measure stalled on the Senate floor.

Senators voted 45-52 on Wednesday morning to uphold a Republican objection to the legislation, which proposed $140 billion in extensions of current tax breaks and of certain social safety-net programs. Sixty votes were required to waive the point of order.

Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus , D-Mont., was expected to unveil a new package, one that is likely to include scaled-back versions of the benefit provisions in the version that was withdrawn Wednesday morning.
