A collector of military memorabilia stabbed his wife to death with a bayonet because he thought she was having an affair with a thatcher, a court heard.

Paul Green, 59, was allegedly convinced his wife Sharon, 53, was having a relationship with Stephen Pye who had re-thatched their home.

He stabbed her five times in the chest with the 25cm blade of the bayonet which was part of his collection of World War Two artefacts, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Mr Green, who denies murder, kept gas masks, deactivated rifles and other weapons in a ‘museum’ at his family home in the former Old Bell pub in Marlesford, Suffolk.

He tried to commit suicide by driving his Ford Escort van into a tree after killing his wife on November 19 or 20 last year, the court heard.
