The European Union said Monday it has launched an antitrust probe against IBM Corp., reviving decades-old allegations that the technology giant has abused its dominant position in the mainframe computer market.

IBM denied the charges, while arguing that they’re being fueled by rivals including Microsoft Corp.

Shares of IBM fell slightly as the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, unveiled its investigation, which stems from complaints filed by software vendors T3 Technologies — which is partly backed by Microsoft — and Turbo Hercules.

The probe “does not imply that the commission has proof of infringements,” the EC said in a statement.
