In a campaign ad released today, Arizona Sen. John McCain is hitting his primary opponent, J.D. Hayworth, for suggesting that Americans would be worse off if they had elected McCain over President Obama in 2008.

At a Tea Party gathering in Phoenix Tuesday night, Hayworth said that while he disapproves of Obama, “the last thing we needed was a progressive trying to wear a Republican cloth coat as president of the United States.”

Hayworth has pushed back, insinuating in a recent radio interview that his words were twisted that way by the McCain campaign and the media.

He denied the story on 550 KFYI radio, saying, “Here’s the difference. Here’s what I said: I did not support Barack Obama for the presidency, nor did I say it was a good thing he was elected,” Hayworth said. “That’s what you guys are trying to morph this into.”

Hayworth’s campaign could not immediately be reached for comment.
