AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka is inserting himself into America’s highest-profile labor conflict with an offer to serve as a mediator in the dispute between the National Football League and the NFL Players Association.

Trumka wrote Commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association President DeMaurice Smith earlier this week to propose a meeting of the three men.

He called his plan “an immediate and important step toward saving football for the 2011 season and avoiding the significant job losses that will occur if owners lock out the players and cancel games.”
