Jim Thome gets the last laugh

Font Size:

MINNEAPOLIS — There was no way Denard Span possibly could have been talking about Jim Thome.

None.

His manager Ron Gardenhire? Maybe. Volatile Twins outfielder Delmon Young? Possibly.

“We call him’The Animal,’ ” Span said Tuesday. “He’ll give you an animal look on the bench. He’ll come up to you, look at you, give you a head nod like, ‘You’re about to do something special,’ and not say one word.

“That’s Jim Thome, and he’s been more than what anyone on this team expected.”

Lift your arms above your head and try to take a deep breath, South Side. This latest punch to the gut that just removed all the wind from your lungs is proudly presented by the Minnesota Twins.

Again.

Who knew? All that time wearing the black and white, and the one knock on Thome — besides his slow feet on the bases — was he didn’t have an edge. He was the clich1/8©-talking choirboy from Peoria who made you feel worse about yourself as a person because of how gentle a soul he was.
