Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine put on his best face about Tuesday’s likely election results but acknowledged that convincing voters to keep Democrats in power is going to be “tough.”

“The other guys say their going to take both houses, I’m saying were going to retain both houses,” said Kaine on MSNBC. “It’s tough getting there but we’re seeing good early voting trends. That’s positive. We just have to go out there and slug it out.”

The panel was noticeably tough on the DNC chair, with Mika Brzezinski telling Kaine that Democrats had a “tough sell” and interjecting: “It’s not looking good.”

Kaine said keeping the House would be a “challenge” and predicted that the outcome of the midterm election would result in a government more closely resembling the American political environment.

“What you’re going to see … is the margins in both Houses are going to be much more equivalent to what the American population is,” he said. “As good as we saw on inauguration day 2009 … this will confirm that we’re a closely divided political nation.”

Kaine said this reality “just has to be taken into account.”
