The Navy will commission its newest destroyer today, named after a Marine from upstate [New York] who sacrificed his life when he threw himself on a hand grenade to save two buddies in Iraq.

Cpl. Jason Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the first Marine to be so honored in Iraq.

Following Navy tradition, Dunham’s mother, Deb, will give the first order — “To man our ship and bring her to life!” — to the 276-member crew of the USS Jason Dunham in a ceremony at Port Everglades, Fla.

“We’ve had the opportunity, the privilege and the pleasure of getting to know the crew of the ship, and they embody what my son was,” she said.
