Skype recovers from significant outage

SEATTLE (AP) — Skype SA is still recovering from an outage caused by undisclosed technology problems.

The Internet calling and messaging service was unavailable to almost all of its users starting midday Wednesday.

By Thursday afternoon, some people still could not log on to Skype. Voice calling, video-chatting and instant messaging are now working. Group video chats and other features are still down.

Skype CEO Tony Bates says about 21 million users are now logged on.

That’s about 90 percent of Skype’s usual count for this time of day.
Bates wouldn’t say what exactly caused the outage. Skype is still investigating the problem.

Skype was sold late last year by eBay Inc. for about $2 billion to an investor group that includes Skype’s founders. About 124 million people use the service each month.
