A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly attacking his 69-year-old father with a samurai sword, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

John Cahan of Spring Valley allegedly burst into his father’s bedroom at 3 a.m. Sunday and demanded that he put out his hand so it could be cut off. His father refused but Cahan struck him on the leg with the sword, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Several hours later Cahan called paramedics, asserting that his father had been hurt in an accident. His father was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
