Bronx courts alter rules to unclog a whopping 5,296 felony cases

Faced with a crippling backlog of felony cases in the Bronx, court administrators are rolling back a major part of the borough’s “catastrophic” courts merger.

The reversal means pretrial felony and misdemeanor cases will be handled by separate pools of judges – as they were before the much-criticized streamlining.

The change is aimed at resolving the whopping 5,296 felony cases pending in the Bronx, nearly twice the number pending when the Criminal and Supreme Courts merged in 2004.
