It’s official, the Senate Tea Party Caucus is a reality! Members of the newly formed Senate Tea Party Caucus, few though they currently may be, convened Thursday for their very first meeting.

Republican Senators Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah, Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Jerry Moran from Kentucky all attended the gathering, which also featured a number of grassroots leaders from the Tea Party movement.

Economic issues dominated the discussion. Senators reportedly talked about reducing the deficit, the size of government and spending.

“This event was a great opportunity to let the grassroots folks who helped us get elected know that we are here to follow through on the commitments we made while campaigning,” said Paul. “To fight for a balanced budget, end this out-of-control spending, and get big government out of our lives – this is what we said we’d do when we got here, and that is what we’re doing.”

With the first meeting out of the way, members expect to continue convening on a regular basis.
