First off, Kirstie’s rumba to “Over the Rainbow” dealt with her mother’s death and her father’s near death at the hands of a drunk driver in 1980, but also the fact she got her first movie role, in Star Trek II, within 72 hours of the tragedy. “The song depicts hopefulness after the despair,” she said. In fact, the routine itself paralleled that combination.
