A new ad hits Republicans for their positions on the debt ceiling. Snore. But it’s not coming from any Democrat group! Wha … ?

Club for Growth, the powerful conservative group dedicated to limiting government spending, launched a TV ad campaign on Monday wondering aloud if Republicans will “cave in or show some spine” by refusing to raise the debt limit.

Featuring a braying donkey alongside President Barack Obama, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Club for Growth spot includes a member of the Rhinocerotidae family besides Republican leaders Rep. John Boehner, Rep. Eric Cantor and Sen. Mitch McConnell. The ad continues with:

“We already have one party committed to bigger government. We don’t need another.”

Speaker Boehner has been walking a political tightrope for the past week in negotiations with the White House over a debt deal that could include long-term spending cuts in return for raising the debt ceiling.

The national ad will run “indefinitely” on Fox, said Barney Keller, Club for Growth communications director. Along with the national ad, the free-market group also launched statewide ads against Republican Sens. Richard Lugar of Indiana and Orrin Hatch of Utah, attacking them for what the group considers their very un-conservative fiscal records.
