(CNBC) — Stocks rallied strongly in the final hour Wednesday, logging a three-day gain, after hovering near the flat line for most of the session, but investors remained cautious ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s Jackson Hole speech at the end of week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished near session highs in a volatile trading day. The blue-chip index crossed the flat line almost 15 times during the trading session.

BofA and Home Depot gained, while ExxonMobil was the only decliner on the Dow.
