After a flood of backlash from customers and reports of an FCC investigation, Verizon has decided to cancel its policy of charging a $2 “convenience fee” for bill payments made over the phone and online.
The policy was supposed to go into effect on January 15, 2012 and was designed as a sort of tax to encourage customers to sign up for automatic payments.
It’s also possible that Verizon wanted to avoid fees from credit card companies when customers paid with them online.
