Egyptians remind Hillary Clinton about Monica Lewinsky

Font Size:

One of Hillary Clinton’s favorite people once noted that all great historical figures appear twice: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.

I’ll let you decide who’s who and which one is which here. AFP:

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was taunted by chants of “Monica, Monica” by tomato-throwing demonstrators as she visited the Egyptian port city of Alexandria on Sunday.

The chants, referring to the Monica Lewinsky scandal when her husband, Bill Clinton, was president, were heard outside the US consulate as she visited for its reopening…

Tomatoes, shoes and a water bottle were thrown at part of Clinton’s motorcade as it pulled up, protected by riot police, although a US official said Clinton’s own vehicle was not hit.

The Clintons have always added an element of vaudeville to modern public life, and now they’ve got the flying produce to prove it.

It seems unfair to blame Hillary for her husband’s infidelities, of course. Shouldn’t she get credit for standing by her man? But then, Egyptians aren’t really known for their sensitive treatment of women’s issues. Well, nobody was hurt in the incident and her pantsuit was unstained, so we can all have a good laugh.

And what are those guys so ticked off about?

The protest appears to have been the result of suspicions that Washington had helped the Muslim Brotherhood win elections in Egypt in the wake of last year’s ouster of president Hosni Mubarak after 18 days of massive street protests.

They don’t like the Muslim Brotherhood? Huh. Apparently Egyptians can be racists too.
