New site makes dating easier for boozy DC residents

Everyone knows by now that the current generation of twenty-somethings doesn’t “date” in the traditional sense of the word (a wide generalization, but a popular one nevertheless). Enter: Dating in Groups, a new dating service for the young, deal-loving, alcohol-swigging, and kinda horny residents of Washington, D.C.

The service works in several ways. Users set up a profile on the site, which is visible to other DiG members, and members meet up in groups for planned events around town.

Since old-fashioned dating isn’t really a thing anymore, the “group hang” is a popular approach — groups of like-minded people hang out and then duos split off from there. This tactic is successful because everyone knows that the current generation of twenty-somethings is too immature to handle real-life adult dating situations.

Also, despite expensive tastes, the typical twenty-something D.C. resident is broke as a joke, so incorporating the popularity of “deal” sites (think Groupon, LivingSocial) with a dating service is pretty much ideal for your average Hill staffer.

According to the Brewers Almanac, the 62 square-mile District consumed more wine per capita than the entire state of California in 2010. That’s an f-ton of wine for an area with a population of just over one million people. People around here just really like to drink, probably to keep from thinking about how little money we are making.

So with these trends in mind (the group-hang, saving $ with deals, and the proclivity for boozing), the idea for Dating in Groups was born: A dating site that works by “incorporating a group aspect and providing ideas and deals on planned dates for young professionals in the D.C. area.”

Say what you will about how D.C. isn’t very hip or cool, but at the very least we like to throw ’em back. So by combining the safety net of a group-hang type situation, mix it with lots of alcohol and BOOM — that’s when the magic happens.

The site launches Thursday, Sept. 27 with a launch party at the cool-for-D.C. bar George, in Georgetown. The first 2,000 people to sign up for DiG will get a free membership, which gets you access to members-only parties and a buffet of guys and girls.
