A high school in Albany, New York was forced to apologize after an English teacher gave students a writing assignment requiring them to think like Nazis and argue that “Jews are evil and the source of our problems.”

The teacher, who was not identified, instructed students to “pretend that I am a member of the government in Nazi Germany, and that you are being challenged to convince me that you are loyal to the Nazis by writing an essay convincing me that Jews are evil and the source of our problems.”

A third of the students in the teacher’s class refused to comply with the instructions, according to the Times-Union. The teacher’s fate was not disclosed.

Albany Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard issued an apology on behalf of the school.

“I would apologize to our families,” she said in a statement. “I don’t believe there was malice or intent to cause any insensitivities to our families of Jewish faith.”

Administrators said the assignment was intended to hone students’ persuasive writing skills — something required under Common Core, the new federal curriculum standards.
