Federal spending nearly triples during the last two weeks of the fiscal year, according to government data compiled by the fiscally conservative group Bankrupting America.

The group is attempting to draw attention to such the spike in government spending as agencies use the remaining budgeted funds so that they will be able to request just as much funding next year.

Through its “Spend it or Lose it” campaign, Bankrupting America is pushing Washington to revamp its budgeting process.

In addition to creating a petition and a letter writing campaign, Bankrupting America has produced a Web knockoff of the popular TV show “The Office,” with a DC spin to convey their message.

The mini series, “The Government,” tells a precautionary tale, by chronicling the day-to-day office life of a federal agency attempting to spend their way to a bigger budget.

The following chart breaks down the total weekly spending by government agencies from 2010 to 2012.

“The flurry of year-end spending is associated with a drop-off in the quality of investment,” the group claims.

Bankrupting America believes that this dramatic spike in spending is not due to an increased need, but rather, a desire to maintain an increased budget.
