But not because he’s terrible at the job. Not for any of the things we’ve seen over the past 5 years. No, no, no.
It’s because America is ungovernable, of course!
It’s virtually impossible to be a successful modern president
Being president is the most powerful job in the world. At which you will almost certainly fail.
Why? For lots of reasons up to and including:
* The decline of the bully pulpit as a persuasion mechanism
* The deep partisanship present not only in Congress but also in the electorate more broadly
* The splintering of the mainstream media/the rise of social media.
And then Cillizza types a lot more words after that. He doesn’t let Obama off the hook entirely, but he concludes that hey, nobody else could’ve done a better job.
So go grab a burger, Mr. President. Get in a quick nine before the fundraiser. Issue executive orders, and give speeches, and blame the Republicans for everything that goes wrong under your watch, and enjoy all of your other favorite things.
You did your best, right? Of course you did.
Take a break, King Barry. You’ve earned it.
