Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne appeared on MSNBC’s “Alex Wagner Now” to give his take on a series of GOP ads attacking their Democratic opponents for their records on combatting ISIS. According to Dionne, the real reasons Republicans are bringing up ISIS are because they want to instill fear in the electorate, and because they want to look tough in comparison to female Democratic Senators.

“The Republicans did a very good job of using fear and unease in the 2002 elections after the attacks on 9/11. And I think what you’re seeing now is an attempt to recreate some of the feeling that helped them in that election. And so yeah, it’ll help with the base.

I’ve been the last week in New Hampshire and in North Carolina, and in those Senate races you can see the Republicans trying to use this issue both to heighten the immigration issue– fears at the border– but also to sort of convey toughness. And it’s worth noting those two states have women Democratic incumbent Senators.”
