Democratic Senator Mark Pryor is locked in a head-to-head battle with Republican Congressman Tom Cotton for one of Arkansas’ Senate seats. But media coverage has largely ignored two third-party candidates who are both polling around two percent– Libertarian Nathan LaFrance and the Green Party’s Mark Swaney. But one comment from  Mark Swaney during the first Arkansas Senate debate ought to raise eyebrows; namely, that the GOP doesn’t care if babies starve.

The candidates were asked about their stances on the federal deficit, and Swaney began with this gem: “I’ve often believed that the Republican Party exists for one reason and one reason only, and that is to ensure that rich people pay the lowest possible tax…”

“Yet these same people find it unhappy [sic] that they need to reduce spending by taking the money from women’s and children’s programs,” he continued, somewhat incomprehensibly (wouldn’t those evil Republicans be happy they were taking money from innocents?).

But Swaney ended strong. “These are people who don’t care if babies starve. They love their ideology more than they love human beings.”
