CNN, which bills itself as “The Most Trusted Name in News,” sure knows how to put a weird damper on a perfectly heartwarming, patriotic and downright tearjerker story during the week of Veterans Day.
The video story is entitled “Sailor mom surprises daughter at school.” It first appeared on CNN on Thursday — on loan from an Indianapolis Fox affiliate.
Prior to CNN’s presentation of the video (just after the mandatory commercial), a warning message appeared for several seconds in bold font atop a two-tone black background.
“Please be advised you are about to hear an excerpt of the national anthem,” the warning declared.
Got that? Brace yourselves, America, because a snippet of the song expressing America’s patriotic soul is about to hit your tender ears.
The video itself includes kids singing and waving American flags. There are old, proud veterans. There are hand over hearts. At the end, there are well-deserved tears. You’ll probably blubber right along with mother and daughter — though CNN provides no crying warning.
The warning was the result of a mistake by an employee, a CNN spokesman told The Daily Caller. It stemmed from the employee’s unfortunate interpretation of a company policy which, respectfully, only allows “The Star-Spangled Banner” to be played in its glorious entirety.
Thus, the warning wasn’t about the substance of the national anthem. It was about the fact that the video contained only part of the song.
“The graphic was included in error and has been removed,” the CNN spokesman said. “The video remains on the site.”
Less than two hours after TheDC contacted CNN, the pre-video warning message about the national anthem snippet had disappeared.
