Police are questioning the son of a Manhattan hedge-fund founder who was shot dead in his home Sunday afternoon.
Thomas Gilbert Sr., 70, was shot in the head in the bedroom of his East Side apartment after arguing with his 30-year-old son, Thomas Gilbert Jr., authorities told the New York Post. Gilbert Sr.’s wife found him dead and called 911, and police found a .40 caliber Glock pistol at the scene.
Gilbert Jr. was arrested in his residence Sunday night and questioned in connection with the murder, but has not been charged, police told Reuters Monday morning. A doorman at Gilbert Sr.’s building told police he got “a bad vibe” when he saw Gilbert Jr. walk into the building wearing a hoodie shortly before the gun shot, a neighbor told The New York Daily News.
He attended Deerfield Academy, which costs about $50,000 a year, and graduated from Princeton in 2009, reports The Daily Mail. He’s been photographed at several black tie events, but his current profession is unclear.
One of Gilbert Jr.’s Princeton classmates told the Daily Mail he was “a highly disturbed individual.”
The father and son were discussing “differences in their relationship” just before the gun shot, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Gilbert Sr.’s neighbor, Christopher Kelly, told the New York Post he heard the gunshot. “I heard a loud sound right above me,” he said. “In New York, you hear loud noises. I thought somebody dropped something.”
“It’s horrible,” he added.
Gilbert Sr. graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Business School, and founded Wainscott Capital Partners in 2011. He was the chief investment officer of the small hedge fund, which focuses on biotech and health care.
“He was a pillar on Wall Street — somebody everyone looked up to,” Gilbert Sr.’s neighbor, Hector Torres, told the New York Post. “They seem like a normal family,” he added. “Every time I saw him in the elevator, he would say, ‘Hi.’ He would ask how I was.”
