Sanitation workers in Jordan’s capital city had to ditch their uniforms amid public outcry that they were reminiscent of Islamic State brutality.
Orange outfits will be switched for turquoise ones, in response to demands from the public and family of Jordanian pilot, Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh, who was wearing an orange jumpsuit while burned to death at the hands of the Islamic State.
Al-Kaseasbeh’s brother was quoted by the Associated Press as saying:
“It’s the right of our children not to see this color in the streets,” he said. “Our workers and our people deserve not to have to see this color which reminds them of the evil actions of Islamic State.”
Twenty-one Egyptian Christians were beheaded by Islamic State militants in Libya while wearing a similar jumpsuit, the video released shortly after the Jordanian pilot’s execution. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi retaliated by launching air strikes on Islamic State targets in Libya.
Amman’s 5,000 workers will begin wearing the new uniforms in late March.
