No one knows where former Congressman Walter Fauntroy is. And his friends, his family — and the police — would all like to know.
During a Wednesday press conference, however, friends of the former civil rights leader and D.C. delegate to Congress dropped a few hints.
During the press conference, held at the United Black Fund offices in Southeast Washington, D.C., Fauntroy’s associates said he is on an undisclosed “mission” in Africa that may have something to do with green technologies or helping disadvantaged people or something like that, though they are not positive where he is and why he is not in Maryland handling the warrant for his arrest.
Johnny Barnes, Fauntroy’s attorney, told The Washington City Paper he believes Fauntroy is in Dubai, but he is not certain.
In a very long and bizarre statement titled “They Kill Trees: When and Perhaps Why Congressman Fauntroy Fell” the group of Fauntroy’s friends and supporters said the home Fauntroy shared with his elderly wife (before he took off for Africa in 2012) is facing foreclosure, and they desperately need help to keep it.
“Upon his return, the inquiries can be made and the speculation can be addressed,” the statement reads. “For now, those of us who know the long legacy he has left and even those who do not can collectively ensure that his historic home continues to give comfort to his wife and will house him when he reappears.”
According to The Washington Post, The Fauntroys filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this month, in which they claimed debts somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million. In 2006, the Fauntroy’s took out a $650,000 mortgage on their home, which they defaulted on in 2014, and have been battling foreclosure ever since. In the documents related to his bankruptcy case, Fauntroy said he recently suffered a medical emergency, but didn’t give any details.
Fauntroy is also facing criminal charges for a bounced $55,000 check he wrote in 2009 for an Obama inauguration party that never happened. Fauntroy has failed to show up for several hearings related to the check, and will be arrested immediately should he return to the country.
Some of Fauntroy’s associates may travel to Dubai to look for him, but they have no concrete plans.
