Media layoffs are usually a big story for Erik Wemple‘s rarely reported Washington Post journalism blog–unless his own employer wields the axe.

Wemple, whose lovely wife, according to WaPo and other reports, was once arrested and, he says, entirely cleared of hurling dog feces at an unsuspecting business owner, covered pink slips at Time, the New York Times, The Washington Times and even something called Patch.com.

But so far, Wemple has not reported WaPo layoffs on the business side of the paper. But, hey, they were only announced one week ago.

What is the rush?

Maybe, Wemple missed the story, first reported here, because his employer worked so hard to keep the whole things under wraps? (We jest. The email from WaPo publisher Fred Ryan announcing the cuts, plus newsroom hires, was posted on the paper’s own PR. blog.)

Ryan is scheduled to discuss the staff changes at a WaPo town hall Wednesday.

Wemple immediately hung up on this reporter Tuesday afternoon.
