President Barack Obama will take Cuba off the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism amid efforts to normalize relations between countries.

Reports The Associate Press:

Obama made the final decision following a State Department review of Cuba’s presence on the list. The terror designation has been a stain on Cuba’s pride and a major stumbling block for efforts to mend ties between Washington and Havana.

Obama said Cuba has not supported terrorism in the last six months and has made assurances against doing so in the future, according to AP.

The announcement comes days after Obama met with Cuban President Raul Castro at a summit in Panama. Congress has 45 days to respond to the president’s notification of intent.
