A married Christian couple that recently celebrated their tenth anniversary threatened Wednesday to divorce if gay marriage becomes legal in Australia.

The Australian couple appeared on the cover of Canberra City News to share their views and explain that their divorce is not for conventional reasons.

High school sweethearts Nick and Sarah Jensen share a distaste for the government’s sovereignty over all domains, and how that has led to a new definition of marriage.

“My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government’s regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnisation of same sex couples,” Jensen told City News.

While their legal marital status will change, Nick, the Director of the Lachlan Macquarie Institute, told the magazine he and Sarah will continue to live together, have more children, and refer to each other as husband and wife. Jensen’s previous employer, Australian Christian Lobby, is a conservative group that expresses open views against same-sex marriage.

“Any attempt to change the definition of marriage by law is not something in which we are able to partake,” Nick said. “As Christians, we believe that marriage is not a human invention.”

Canberra City News’s article has received a lot of attention, including many comments deeming the couple and even the article homophobic.

One commenter, Milan J. wrote, “I am absolutely disgusted that you placed these two morons on your cover. I cannot believe that such ugly and selfish individuals exist in our society.”

Despite angry comments and criticisms in response to the article, the magazine’s editor, Ian Meikle, has defended the story. He claimed that while the story does not reflect the opinions of the paper, the couple’s argument warrants some attention.

Meikle said, “I think this couple had an interesting angle, and that it was newsworthy,” reports news.com.au.
