Two Florida prison guards were charged with orchestrating a cover up after one of the guards allegedly beat an inmate in 2014. A federal grand jury handed down the indictment Wednesday.
William Houghton was charged with violating the civil rights of an inmate when he allegedly pummeled a prisoner on March 22, hitting him repeatedly in the head and face and, according to the Department of Justice, “causing him injury.”
Houghton and Eddie Rodas-Castro were charged with obstruction of justice after they allegedly falsified Bureau of Prison reports and made false statements to federal investigators to cover up the assault.
They allegedly tried to push the false story that the inmate had attacked Houghton.
The two men entered not guilty pleas. Houghton’s bond was set at $50,000 and Rodas-Castro’s was set at $25,000.
Both men are corrections officers at the Coleman Correctional Facility in Coleman, Florida.
Their story is just another of many reports of prison guards abusing inmates. In one case, a video captured a jail guard shatter the teeth of an inmate in a wheelchair.
In another case, two female inmates said that 8 prison guards at the women’s facility at Riker’s Island in New York were involved in the systematic sexual abuse of inmates.
