Anti-Islam Dutch politician Geert Wilders will air Mohammed cartoons on national television Saturday, according to his political party.
The cartoons will be broadcast during a three-minute slot designated for Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV), reports Agence France Presse. They will be repeated June 24 and July 3.
Wilders says he is defending freedom of speech following the attack on a Mohammed cartoon contest in Garland, Texas. Two armed gunmen opened fire outside the event, injuring a security guard before being shot and killed. (RELATED: ISIS Claims Responsibility For First Attack On US Soil)
Dutch embassies are purportedly being briefed on necessary security measures if the highly-controversial cartoons are aired. Wilders could have his airtime suspended for a maximum of four years, reports AFP.
The MP announced his intention earlier this month, after the Dutch parliament refused to exhibit the cartoons. In response, the Council of Moroccan Mosques in the Netherlands released a cartoon of Wilders, mocking his intention to reduce the number of Moroccans in the country.
Less than six months ago, armed Islamic extremists attacked a French satirical magazine and killed 12 people for publishing depictions of Mohammed.
