Speaker of the House John Boehner’s announcement Friday that he is resigning his seat at the end of October may help the government avoid a shutdown.

The House is expected to vote on a stopgap spending measure next week before the government runs out of money Sept. 30 which would continue to provide funding for Planned Parenthood.

The clean version of the bill is expected to pass with the help of Democrats.

“We know there’s going to be Republicans who vote against it. We know that number will probably be such that it will require Democrats to pass it,” Rep. Mick Mulvaney told the Washington Post. “The only real question is, how many Republicans ultimately vote against a clean CR that funds Planned Parenthood? The numbers I’ve heard are between 50 and 120.”

Prioritizing keeping the government open over defunding the women’s health organization is the latest in a series of battles the House speaker has faced with conservatives.

Conservatives’ push to oust Boehner from his leadership is one of the reasons the Ohio Republican cited for the unexpected exit.

“It’s become clear to me that this prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable harm to the institution,” he said in his speech. “So this morning, I informed my colleagues that I would resign from the speakership and resign from Congress at the end of October.”

Even if the measure passes both chambers next week, it will only keep the government funded through early December, a challenge Boehner’s replacement will have to take on.
