3 Basic Facts YouTube’s Global Warming Campaign Got Wrong

YouTube is pressuring viewers to sign a petition against global warming, but the video promoting the petition gets basic facts about global warming wrong.

Here’s the official Youtube Twitter account promoting the petition and the video.

Of the three major claims Youtube’s video makes, every one of them is outright wrong.

1: The COP 21 Summit Is A “Binding Deal.”  

John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, has publicly stated that any deal made during the summit won’t be legally binding, possibly because a legally binding deal would require the approval of Congress. The European Union has claimed that a deal will be legally binding, but other countries have rejected the claims.

2: Global Warming Will Make Hurricanes “More Likely To Happen.”

The video’s claim is precisely the opposite of what climate models project. Global warming is projected to reduce number of hurricanes according to studies sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Research suggests that the number of hurricanes each summer could decrease by about 18 percent.

The United States is experiencing a decade-long “hurricane drought.”  The last Category 3 or higher hurricane make landfall in the U.S. was Hurricane Wilma in October of 2005. “That’s an unprecedented streak, going back to 1900—the longest drought before the current one was nearly 1,000 days shorter,” according to Time magazine.

3: Global Warming Will Make Chocolate More Expensive

Youtube’s video claims global warming will make chocolate more expensive by increasing the price of coca beans, a key ingredient. The price of cocoa beans, however, has declined over the last 20 years by 44 percent.
