The legendary singer struggled with substance abuse for many years of her life, and she was diagnosed with liver disease in 2008 and later received a kidney transplant after she developed Hepatitis C.

“I think that I am a walking testimony that you can have scars,” Cole told CBS during an interview in 2006. “You can go through turbulent times and still have victory in your life.”
