Ralf Jaeger, interior minister for North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, is outraged at the mass sexual assault of women on New Year’s Eve. But he told the BBC that he is equally, if not slightly more outraged at some who have pushed back against accepting Middle Eastern refugees.

“What happens on the right-wing platforms and in chat rooms is at least as awful as the acts of those assaulting the women,” Jaeger said. “This is poisoning the climate of our society.”

He joins the mayor of Cologne and several other German officials and media who have been criticized by the victims for protecting the alleged perpetrators.
