Mexican authorities have formally requested the extradition of Sinaloa Cartel leader “El Chapo” Guzman to stand trial in the U.S. According to Mexican law, El Chapo’s lawyers have 20 days to make their case that their client should not be sent to the U.S.

El Chapo was on the run since July until he was captured by Mexican Marines during a Jan. 8 raid. The process to legally extradite El Chapo to the U.S. could take several months.

U.S. authorities have filed two extradition requests for El Chapo, in June and August respectively. The Mexican government approved of both extradition requests.

According to the Associated Press, “Guzman’s attorney Juan Pablo Badillo has said the defense has already filed six motions to challenge extradition requests. Badillo said that his client shouldn’t be extradited to the U.S. because ‘our country must respect national sovereignty, the sovereignty of its institutions to impart justice.'”

The world’s most notorious narcotics trafficker is currently being held by Mexican authorities in Altiplano Prison from which he had previously escaped in July 2015. According to CNN, “Guzman is included in at least seven indictments in various U.S. jurisdictions.”
