The Marine Corps has launched an investigation into Sgt. Frank Cala, who made comments on celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s reality cooking show “Hell’s Kitchen” denigrating female Marines for causing drama.

Cala, the executive chef at the Home of the Commandants, delivered the tirade Friday after being removed from the show, Military.com reports.

“The blue team never had any drama until the females came aboard,” Cala said in an interview on the show. “That’s when the ship sunk. And that’s exactly why I get [bleeped] female Marines and I send them back wherever [bleeped] they came from.”

That’s when the social media crowd began to take notice, prompting a response from Sgt. Bryan Nygaard, who serves in public affairs at the recruiting station in Baltimore.

“I can assure you that Sergeant Frank Cala’s comments have not gone unnoticed. Sergeant Cala’s comments toward the end of the episode are not consistent with the Marine Corps’ values of honor, courage and commitment,” Nygaard said in a response post, according to Military.com. “I will notify my chain of command as well as Sergeant Cala’s chain of command to ensure that corrective action is being taken.”

The U.S. Marine Corps Twitter account also confirmed the existence of an investigation.

Since the controversy kicked off, Cala’s supervisor has come to his defense. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Brian Kauten said the reality show spun Cala’s remarks and took them completely out of context.

“Frank works with female Marines on a daily basis,” Brian Kauten told The Marine Corps Times. “He has five that work with him on a daily basis and he works fine with them. What he said was taken completely out of context.”

“It’s a reality TV show,” Kauten added. “They are going to make you see what they want to see for ratings.”
