A private college in Arizona is now charging students a fee to help pay for illegal immigrants’ tuition, in an effort to make up for what supporters of the fee call “discriminatory politics” in Arizona.

If students at Prescott College do not take steps to opt out, they will be charged a $30 fee each year that will be put into a new fund to establish full-ride scholarships for illegal immigrants attending the college, reported Fox News Wednesday. The fees would add up to more than $12,000 each year, should all of the college’s roughly 400 students pay the fee.

Students and faculty from the Social Justice and Human Rights Master of Arts divisions of the college first proposed the idea. Supporters of the fee told Fox News it will combat Arizona’s “discriminatory politics” regarding illegal immigrants. The state is known for relatively strict enforcement of immigration law.

“I am proud that our students take on the role of scholar activists,” President John Flicker told Fox News, referring to the fee as an example of the university’s commitment to mobilizing “resources towards social justice.”

The fund is named the “Freedom Education Fund,” and in a Facebook post regarding the fund, Prescott College claimed to be the first in the state and second in the nation to implement a fee of this kind.
