A Trump hotel in Dubai found itself in the spotlight Monday over a video allegedly showing migrant workers living in horrific conditions.
The Trump International Golf Club in Dubai is one of many hotels worldwide belonging to the Trump real estate conglomerate. The hotel is currently under construction and workers have reportedly been subjected to extremely harsh living quarters. HBO’s VICE Correspondent Ben Anderson used a hidden camera to uncover the harsh reality the workers must face.
“Even by the unbelievably low-standards of Dubai, the guys living 10 to 21 to a villa are treated really, really badly,” Anderson said in the video. “Just outside the kitchen door was a bathroom that didn’t look fit for human-beings.”
The hotel is part of the Donald Trump business empire, but it is being built by a separate company, reports The Daily Beast. Trump is currently the front-runner in the Republican presidential primaries.
Anderson followed buses of workers miles into the desert where they lived. He toured the cramped and dirty concrete barracks with the help of one worker who remained anonymous. A small kitchen was meant to serve over a hundred people and the bathroom was small, outdoors and smelled like sewage.
The migrant workers came from other countries like Pakistan. One worker noted Pakistan is a much better place, but can’t go back because his employer stole his passport. They were forced to stay and work in almost slave-like conditions. One worker noted he only receives $231 a month.
